SMU Educates Customers About Digital Transition
Posted: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 2:05:04 PM
by Curtis Dean

About 70 people attended SMU's Digital TV Town Meeting on August 19th. The meeting at the Clay County Regional Events Center was designed to explain how the FCC-mandated switch from analog to digital broadcasting by TV stations would affect northwest Iowans.

Many of the people in attendance were under the wrong impression that even if they have cable TV service, they still need to get a new TV or a digital box. SMU staff explained that the "digital transition" should only affect customers who use an antenna to pick up TV stations, not cable customers. SMU plans to convert the digital TV stations back to analog and place them on our cable system after the February 17, 2009 deadline.

The presentation was videotaped and will be shown on The Spencer Channel at a later date.

SMU...A Renewable Energy Leader
Posted: Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 1:55:09 PM
by Curtis Dean

There's been alot of attention lately to renewable energy. And for good reason; increasing use of renewable energy is the key to achieving American energy independence and fighting global climate change.

What you might not know is that Spencer Municipal Utilities, your community-owned electric company-is already on the forefront of renewable energy usage. In 2006, SMU customers used about 170 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. Of that amount approximately 90 million kWh's, or 53%, came from one rewewable source-hydroelectric power. SMU has long term contracts with the Western Area Power Administration to receive renewable hydro-power from dams on the Missouri River.

In addition, SMU is obtaining a growing amount of wind power. In 2006, over 4 million kWh's of power came from the Hancock County Wind farm in north central Iowa. And later this year, SMU will begin receiving another 4 million kWh's of wind power from the new Crosswind Wind Farm in Palo Alto County, bringing SMU's share of wind energy to nearly 5% of total Spencer energy consumption.

As Spencer grows, SMU will continue to look at new sources of renewable power for our customers. We invite you to become a partner in these efforts by signing up for the Green City Energy program through SMU. By making a voluntary contribution on a one-time or monthly basis, you will be investing in future renewable energy efforts. Stop by our customer service center for more information or to pick up a brochure.

In the spring of 2007, Spencer Trees Forever will be planting trees at the new playgrounds in conjunction with Positively Spencer and the Playgrounds For Neighborhoods project at North School, Sunset, and Water Way parks.

People interested in becoming a volunteer for Spencer Trees Forever can contact the Spencer Parks and Recreation Department at 580-7260.
